Job Fairs and Hiring Events

Career fairs, special hiring events, and open interviews are excellent ways to meet face to face with hiring employers.

Be Prepared

  • Career Fair success lies in effective preparation and communication. Make sure to research the employers you want to visit: learn about them, the positions they're looking to fill, and what type of candidates they're looking for.  The more you know about a company, the more you can converse with the company representative and the more memorable you will be.

  • Dress for success.  Wear interview-appropriate attire:  avoid jeans, flip-flops, and hoodies.  Be sure that your hair is groomed nicely, and wear comfortable shoes for standing!  Remember that you only have one chance to make a first impression.

  • Bring plenty of copies of your resume to hand out.  Be sure that you have updated & proofread it prior to attending.  If you have business cards, bring them with you as well.

  • Prepare a 30-second elevator pitch to summarize who you are, what you do, and why you're the perfect candidate.  Be sure that it sounds natural & conversational.

  • Be confident, enthusiastic, polite, and calm.  Remember to shake hands, introduce yourself, make eye contact, and most importantly - smile!
